Did you know that 1 in every 6 students will miss 15 days or more of school this year?
Education can only fulfill its promise as the great equalizer—a force that can overcome differences in privilege and background—when we work to ensure that students are in school every day and receive the support they need to learn and thrive. It’s time for us to commit to supporting our youth. In doing so, we will minimize absenteeism in schools and break the school to prison pipeline.
We are looking for volunteers to help us with our Free After School Program (M-F, 3:00-6:00pm). We will be helping first through eighth grade students with their homework and testing, while providing them nutritious meals. Other activities will be provided such as counseling, yoga, and meditation to ensure students have the emotional support to thrive in today’s world. This is an invaluable opportunity that will give students healthy tools to succeed in all areas of their life.
At the same time, we know that many students experience tremendous adversity in their lives, including poverty, health challenges, community violence, and difficult family circumstances. These issues make it difficult for them to take advantage of the opportunity to learn at school and thus we urge and welcome parents to be a part of the process.
